Reindeer round-up

September 2016, Valdresflye in Jotunheimen.

Every autumn reindeers are gathered up in Jotunheimen for round-up, and every september Vågå Tamrein chooses around 1000 animals for slaughter.

For Jutulskinn that is the most important material collecting day. Then we work from the morning to the evening with drying and salting skins that we will use during the next year.

Autumn skins are very fine and shorthaired, and often without insect bites. Dried autumn skins fit very well to outdoor and indoor use. We salt the skins that we use for leather tanning. We also flays leg skins, that are used for, for example, shoes.
